The Domino Building

New York firm Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG) along with Boston firm Goody Clancy has completed an extension with gradually sloping walls that resemble falling dominos at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. The project was designed to continue a link between the mall with activities in the hub. The 70,000-square-foot, three-storey Business Innovation Hub was initially completed in 1964, to provide a flexible space for students and faculty. The new volume, however, comprises a mix collaborative study and social area that nearly doubles the school's previous offering and can accommodate more than 150 staff and 5,000 students. It also features 5,000-square foot ground floor common area. It also has a slatted facade and white finishes providing almost all of the rooms within the building to receive natural light.
