The Angular Art Museum

New York based design studio lead by Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long, OMA has imagined an angular addition to the contemporary art museum in Lower Manhattan which was originally designed in 2007 by Tokyo-based Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA. The 60,000 square feet structure would now include a 50,000 square feet extension of gallery space for the New Museum's education and cultural programme. The uniqueness of the facility is that it will be housed in an angular structure encased in laminated glass with metal mesh. The lower layers of the building will be sliced so as to provide space for a street-level plaza while the top half will associate triangular terraces that offer views of the surrounds. The other layers include an expanded lobby and bookstore, not to mention a permanent home for the museum's arts and also space for community and education programmes. Construction on the New Museum extension is slated to begin this year.
