The Elcano Housing Block

Madrid-based design studio FRPO founded in 2008 by Fernando Rodriguez and Pablo Oriel has installed Openable concrete panels and sun-shading blinds to the Elcano housing block. The province was used primarily for industrial structures but is now being slowly transformed into housing. Its position is such that to the north of the austere façade of the building lies a busy road and a series of industrial buildings, and the south overlooks a quiet garden space and pool which got sanctioned as regulations restricted the building to a 12 metres depth. It also houses two levels of underground parking. Polished concrete floors, drywall partitions, and floor-to-ceiling thresholds beautify the interiors. Another unique feature of the design is prefabricated glass-reinforced concrete panels, which can be rotated to reveal the aligned windows behind.
