African American Architect, Philip Freelon died Monday 9 July 2019 in North Carolina. He was the chief Architect behind many cultural projects including the renowned Washington DC's National Museum of African American History and San Francisco's Museum of the African Diaspora. He also founded his Architecture firm The Freelon Group in 1990. He earned his bachelors in environmental design and Architecture from North Carolina State University and his masters in architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was also the recipient of the Loeb Fellowship and spent a year of independent study at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). He also held a lecture spot in several universities, including Harvard, MIT, the University of Utah, North Carolina State University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the California College of the Arts, the University of Maryland, Syracuse University and College Park. He was appointed to the US Commission of Fine Arts in 2012 by President Barack Obama himself. He was also named Architect of the year by Fast Company.
