London based designers Maich Swift Architects have designed the ‘Potemkin Theatre’ which is a pavilion that was designed to be the backdrop to performances which can be viewed both from across the canal and on the roof of the building. It is also topped with a light beacon. It rests on top of a warehouse in Haggerston and takes its name from Grigory Potemkin, an 18th-century Russian military leader who purportedly built a series of phoney villages to impress Empress Catherine II. The pavilion commissioned by the Architecture Foundation will be a three-story structure, which was built from a series of laminated-veneer timber frames by a team of volunteers over a period of 25 days. “The design was partly focused on resolving the structural issues of creating a beacon, creating this beacon was the core of the Architectural competition,” said Ted Swift, co-founder of Maich Swift Architects. The structure will be used to host a series of events throughout the summer including small music concerts, opera, film screenings, theatrical productions, and other general discussions, meetings, and seminars.
