The Chimelong Theatre in China

Entertainment Architecture Studio Stufish designed the Chimelong Theatre on Hengquin Island in China which reminisces the form of traditional circus tents. Located in southern Macau, this enormous 6,700-seat theatre was built to replace the Chimelong Hengquin International Circus which was damaged by a typhoon in 2016.

The Chimelong Theatre stands out due to its dramatic, undulating form intended to resemble a circus tent and the fold of the stage curtain, but with a structure that can resist the destructive nature of the country’s typhoon. Stufish came up with the idea of this theatre where the audience could enter at ground level, and also 6700 people could exit at the same time through an elevated plaza. Those leaving the circus are brought down to the ground level by two ornate staircases on the site. The theatre’s bright gold façade is complemented by the plaza which is decorated with circus-themed blue and red motifs and playful patterns.
