A group of old brick and concrete structures in Beijing has been rebuilt by joining them together, while using a “folding” circulation route which gives these flat roofs the appearance of walkways. Popular Chinese studio, Arch The studio was the one which conceived this brilliant idea. The building named “Folding Courtyard”, is separated into five blocks by recycling the original building’s bricks, and is now available to be rented for use as work or event spaces.
The original buildings were decrepit, narrow, segregated and also lacked infrastructure; this prompted the need to restore them in order to meet the requirements of modern life. The site now consists of an open courtyard, a series of green spaces that are created between brick structures to give it a nature-friendly and a sophisticated look. The flat roof aims at being a rare public activity area, where its landscape forms an interesting contrast to the buildings and trees in the surrounding.
