The Flood Protection Barrier In Hamburg, Germany

Popular designer, Zara Hadid Architects has completed the sculptural Niederhafen River Promenade in Hamburg, Germany. This was constructed as a part of the city’s flood prevention system. Located along the stretch between St Pauli Landungsbrücken and Baumwall, this flood barrier replaces its predecessor which was built in 1964. The flood protection structure was developed after a multiple storm surges destroyed the homes of 60,000 locals in 1962.

Along with offering an essential flood defense for the city, the designers also added amphitheater-like staircases, a three-storey restaurant and shops to give the city a new space and walkway. This would also lead to the promenade being one of the major tourist spots in the city. The west side of the structure is larger which overlooks the river at 8.9 metres height, while the east side is at 8.6 metres height. At its most narrow point, the barrier is 10m wide.
