The Netherlands can now pride themselves of having the world’s biggest three-storey bicycle park to store 12,656 bikes below Utrecht Central Station. Designed by Ector Hoogstad Architects, the project is part of a wider redevelopment of the area around the city’s railway station. They hope to encourage locals to commute using bicycles and public transport instead of cars, so as to decrease the traffic in the city and make it a more eco-friendly city. The Architects claim that their comfortable bicycle parking is in response to combat major problems posing urban areas: pollution and unorganized transport.
The bike park has three levels of underground stores that can accommodate around 12,656 bicycles. Along with storage, the bike park also has a repair service and bicycle hire outlet. It also uses a digital system to guide cyclists to a parking spot which provides them with the quickest access to the platforms. An inviting atmosphere is created with a combination of a palette of durable materials like concrete, steel, and wood.
