Kengo Kuma and Associates have designed The Odunpazari Modern Museum in Eskisehir, northwest Turkey. The greatest attraction of this structure is that the museum looks like a collection of boxes made from interlocking and stacked timber beams. In Turkish, Odunpazari means firewood. Odunpazari used to be a centre for timber trading, so Kengo Kumba and Associates got the inspiration for the design from its history. Square-shaped blocks surrounded by laminated-timber beams that are stacked atop each other accentuate the look and feel of the museum.
The Odunpazari Modern Museum will showcase items from Tabanca’s 1000-piece collection of contemporary and modern art alongside other exhibits. This structure is designed so that there is a smaller, more intimate space on the lower floor, and the upper floor is reserved for events and exhibitions. A skylit atrium stretches the full height of the three-storey building and it is located at the center of the building. A café and a shop are also present there. The designers hope that visitors will feel excited and comfortable at the museum, which will be more than just a happy place to enjoy art.
