Apple Store Opens in Central Tokyo

Architects Foster + Partners opened its latest Apple store in the Marunouchi district in central Tokyo. According to the Architects, they wanted to create a restrained presence in the bustling city of Tokyo. The two-storey Apple store is built around a double-height void is which is well aligned with the main entrance. The upper floor is accessed from a white-painted aluminium structural staircase. The interior of the building is covered with white plaster, so as to match the exterior of the tower block, whereas the ceilings are custom clad with white ash. The projecting windows of the building are cast with aluminium frames and also serve as a display cabinet on the shop front, thereby offering a glimpse into the store to everyone walking by. The inside of each window is planted with bamboo which lines the perimeter of the structure.
