Old Farmhouses Reused to Create Boutique Hotel in Rural China

Atelier Liu Yuyang has built the XY Yunlu Hotel – which forms the foreground of a mountainous river valley – by using a series of renovated farmhouses in Guangxi, China. The atelier demolished five unused buildings to create 23 guest rooms for the boutique hotel, which is located in a village in the Li River valley in the south of China.

There is also a new restaurant, swimming pool, and yoga pavilion that have a contemporary presence, specially designed to match the character of the village vernacular. The renovated farmhouses have been built from rammed earth and have been demolished to maintain their humble and natural finishes. The interiors are lined with pared-back furnishings and concrete, wood and black steel material palettes are also added. The restaurant, which is built with a steel frame and fitted with glass pivot doors and windows, is open all day to the guests. A 50-metre-long translucent curtain has been added as an alternative to a permanent glass wall around the canopy.
