Affordable Housing Created In Chicago With Colorful Balconies And A Library

John Ronan Architects created a mixed-use building in Chicago, USA, which contains a public library at ground level and a low-cost senior housing on the upper floor. Named as the Independence Library and Apartments, the building is located in the Irving Park district on the city’s Northwest Side. This area showcases a mix of historic and contemporary buildings where some houses date back to the late 19th century.

The building has six storeys and has a roughly rectangular plan. The lower two-storeys accommodate a public library, which is a replacement of a neighbourhood library that burned down years ago. The upper storeys house 44 affordable apartments that are provided to tenants aged 62 or older. Dark grey concrete panels with large stretches of low-emissivity and charcoal-toned glass face the library. On the contrary, the upper part has curved corners and white exteriors that are wrapped in corrugated aluminium. Different-sized windows and balconies that are painted with colours ranging from tangerine to turquoise accentuate the exterior look of the building.
