Architecture of Temples

Ancient India bear witness to a high standard in temple construction and Architecture. It also gave rise to different Architectural styles. These different Architectural styles arose as a result of geographical, climatic, ethnic, racial, historical and linguistic diversities. In a broad sense of the term, temple Architecture can be classified into 3 – Northern style, Southern Style and a mixture of both. The temples of the North and the South were distinguished based on very specific features. If the sikharas were the prominent features of the North then the Gopurams governed the Southern Temples. There also exists many subsidiary shrines within temple complexes, more common in the South Indian temple. Decoration within the temples was another key feature which separated the different temples.
